Every March Two Writing Teachers hosts the Slice of Life Story Challenge. Everyone is welcome to share writing and comment on others in this special community.
As this year's SOLSC has launched, I am visiting my aunt and uncle in South Carolina. My aunt is a retired teacher who loved teaching writng, and she is fascinated with the Challenge. (It helps that three of my four daughter who she knows and loves are slicing alongside me throughout the month.)
Today, she has spent the day pointing out possible slices. We saw a sunning alligator... slice of life. She missed a putt... slice of life. I put her club in the wrong place... you guessed it.
My favorite was when she walked out of her bathroom with a piece of toilet paper.
"It's a slice of life," she said. "Look, there are scalloped edges on the toilet paper. Who has ever had scalloped edges on the toilet paper before?"
I can't say I have ever paid attention to the edges of my toilet paper, although my family does have its favorites. #charmin.
"I couldn't even break it easily," she said. "It doesn't break in a straight line. It's a curved line."
For the rest of the day, any time I had to use the bathroom, I found myself noticing how the toilet paper tore... or didn't. And now, anyone who is reading this post, might pay attention to how their toilet paper tears... or doesn't.
Slices really do appear throughout the day when you are paying attention and looking for them.
Gotta love March.

ReplyDeleteSo funny! Who knows what slice will show up next!
You have an eye for slices, Melanie! I like how even the things that could be mishaps or frustrations are turned around with "That's a Slice!" What a great way to see everything - - through the lens of writing about it.
ReplyDeleteHaha!! This is a perfect slice to remind us of all the places a slice can happen, even in the bathroom!!
ReplyDeleteThe first time I ever saw the scalloped edges was at my very boujee friend's apartment and I thought she got it specifically... nope. Charmin ultra soft decided to make quite the design choice. It does sort of seem like the thing Jill would also buy on purpose though :)
ReplyDeleteHahaha reading this one after reading Clare's slice from yesterday is simply perfection. Toilet paper, slice of life! What a blast!
ReplyDeleteI am right there with your aunt. I was astonished when I saw the scalloped-edged toilet paper at my brother's house. Great idea to use it for a slice!
ReplyDeleteI spy another family member of yours becoming a future slicer!
ReplyDeleteBTW: I remember the day I noticed this. Marc and I had a full five minute discussion about when the change happened, how long could it have been, etc. (You know what he does for work, so I’m sure you understand that this is just normal in our world.)
I saw your title and knew what you were writing about today. I saw this paper at a lovely restaurant recently and actually I did think it would make a good slice! For those of us still using Trader Joe's cheap stuff, this is a long way off!
ReplyDeleteHow fun! I love that your aunt is helping with slice ideas. I'm going to start paying better attention to toilet paper. Maybe she will write you a slice as a guest author before you leave! Happy to read your slices again.
ReplyDeleteSlices…hahaha! I love how your circle of family involved in this challenge is ever-widening! I got that TP ounce and admired it too- you can tell your aunt :) about the writing, i like how it has dialogue and reflection, and a few spare paragraphs, salted with humor.
ReplyDeleteWe live parallel lives man!!!
ReplyDeleteMelanie, such a fun post. This is a good inspiration post, as your aunt suggested things that could be slices, and you proved it could You're right, I will notice the toilet paper next time.
