Slice of Life 2019 9 of 31: Nope, that's not moisturizer!

Throughout the month of March, I am participating in the Slice of Life Story Challenge. I am happy to co-host this event with the team at Two Writing Teachers. Everyone is welcome!

I groaned as I realized that once again, I forgot about the new routine I'm trying to establish in order to combat the cold.

(Please note: You will never hear me complain about the heat in August, so I feel like it's my right to complain about the cold, especially when it's still in the single digits in March.)

Just recently, I decided to move my moisturizer into the shower. That way, according to my plan, I can stay inside the shower a little longer, and, therefore, I can stay warm a little longer. The problem is, for the second day in a row, I forgot. Outside of the shower, I reached for my moisturizer for my goosebumpy self and...it wasn't on the counter--because it was in the shower.

I laughed at myself and my inability to establish a new routine.

"Maybe this will be my post for tomorrow," I thought to myself, as I re-entered the shower. "Nothing like a little self-deprecation in a morning slice."

As I was drafting the potential slice in my head, I pushed down on the pump and rubbed the not-moisturizer on to my arms. My brain was a little slow in registering that the not-moisturizer's consistency was more like conditioner. The realization happened when the sense of smell recognized the problem... but by that point, I needed another pseudo-shower to get the conditioner off my arms. So far this system is not working.

So now I have a somewhat more entertaining post, but an interesting dilemma as to whether to stay the course with a new system or go back to well-established routines. Change is challenging, even when it involves something as mundane as moisturizer.

Happy Slicing,

  1. This one made me laugh out loud, Mel! Love this line: "My brain was a little slow in registering that the not-moisturizer's consistency was more like conditioner." I have to say, your post helps me to feel a little less ridiculous when I'm trying to establish a new routine.

  2. I have heard tell that it takes 21 days to establish a new routine. You are only on day 2. No worries! You will succeed (maybe then it will be warmer too).

  3. I can’t live w/out moisturizer. But conditioner does moisturize, so you kinda did get the essence of your routine change.

  4. Nearly spit out my coffee -- while you might not want me right there in the shower with you... as your reader I was. How about two bottles of moisturizer as a scaffold? Or with that be rescuing? Thanks for the laugh

  5. Stay the course... the live version of this post was just as entertaining... I might even say the written one is better!

  6. Isn't it funny how the best laid out plans come with hitches? My question, how did the conditioner work on your skin? Perhaps you were onto something groundbreaking?

  7. You can establish the new routine. Some mishaps may occur. And some new ideas for slices might be born.

  8. This one made me giggle. Isn't it funny how routines really mess us up sometimes?

And I am with you...this yucky winter weather. We are due for ANOTHER storm this weekend. I can't even.

  11. Ha! Love that you shared a little self-deprecating humor because we can all relate! I try to establish new morning and before bed routines, but you're right! They are hard to remember! Maybe you need to break down and buy one for the shower and one for the bathroom counter. ;-)

  12. Haha! For some reason this post comforts me. I am constantly doing things like this. I tell myself it's because I have a lot to juggle and multi tasking is just not a human talent. Routines do help a lot, so when they change, watch out!

  13. I’ve substituted cream rinse for shampoo before if that makes you feel better!
But seriously starting a new habit is taxing and takes loads of patience. It will happen.
