As I write this post this morning-- and yes, it's Tuesday morning-- I am avoiding my writing.
Back in December, my daughter and I made Bingo cards. We each thought about things we'd like to do and achieve during 2026, and filled in squares that we could X out as the year progressed. Today is June 23. That means that 2026 is close to halfway over.
I have tried new recipes, read several books, and moved up a pickleball level. I have learned how to operate my television, cleaned out my closet, and redone my office shelves. I have reconnected my core muscles. I have not finished my green sweater, but I've worked on it. And I have not returned to my manuscript to revise it and query it out to agents.
I've tried.
I've created a new folder in my google drive. I've bought a new notebook and a favorite pen to start from the hand to paper stage. I've issued personal bribes like when I get a chapter done, I can order a new lip gloss or even something better if I get two chapters done.
Somehow, when I sit down to work on that manuscript, there's laundry to be folded, dust bunnies that swirl, and other articles or posts (like this one) to write. Is anyone else's house very clean when they have a looming writing deadline?
So here's what I'm thinking: Announcing my intention on this blog means that several people will read it, and make comments along the lines of "you can do this" and "get that Bingo card filled in" and maybe even "I'm going to check back in on you." Maybe that's what I need. Since my Bingo card hasn't done its trick, maybe a little public accountability will get me writing.

I love the idea of a bingo card to set goals - big and small - and keep the fun of a game in the work. YES, you CAN do all the things. The blessing is that it sounds like there is a lot of living happening all at once, and the balance of all of it, upping the pickleball level included, means the house might not be clean to your standards. But if you have clean clothes and food to eat and all the things you need when you need them, you're doing great! Keep up the great business of living and give yourself a hug.
ReplyDeleteHmmm....when I avoid, I never clean. I tend to eat snacks and binge watch shows on Netflix! But, yes, I know that feeling of needing to get something done and instead, avoid. For me, I have to leave the house - sit in a coffee shop and write. Then I can't get distracted by house chores. And the piped in music doesn't bother me or if it does, I have my headphones to pick what I hear. Just sharing what works for me. And yes! I'm glad you publicly shared. You got this, Melanie! Plus, so many readers need your ideas shared. Do it for the readers who then can teach better and in turn, grow literate humans. Something our world NEEDS !!! Just do it!!!
ReplyDeleteThat is an excellent idea. I need to create one of my own, except every block should be filled with the words "Work on your writing!"
ReplyDeleteBtw, Melanie, how's that writing going? I'll be checking back, so make sure you have something next time I do!
