Slice of Life 2020: 1 of 31- What Will I Write About?

March is for daily slicing, and all are welcome! Join us at Two Writing Teachers!

"So tomorrow's March 1," I said. "That means I have to be on the lookout for daily slices and stories."

Cecily and I were walking the dog.

"So you can write about anything?" Cecily asked.

"Yes," I said. "I figure I have a few good ones from prom dress shopping. And definitely one about whoopie pies."

Cecily expressed her confusion about prom dresses and whoopie pies, not seeing the stories in seemingly mundane events. The truth is March could make my four daughters a little nervous since many of my slices center on them. There's always that wonder of what Mom is going to tell the world about their lives. And then there's also the fact that my oldest daughter, Larkin, has been a part of the slicing community for several years, as well.

We kept walking, and I explained the slices I could write from the dress road-trip, as well as why whoopie pies mattered.

"You've actually gotten a lot of mileage out of those whoopie pies," Cecily said, as we laughed about her senior slide, her ritual of baking for study groups, and the appreciation anyone on the receiving end of her baked goods had. "You could do a whole whoopie pie slicing series."

I just might.

Before I started this post, I looked back over the posts, over the years. By my count, this is my eighth year of slicing throughout March. Cecily must have been in fourth grade, while the others were in seventh, eight, and tenth. I know some of my slicing will involve rereading and remembering those some of those times. I am grateful for the holding place for so many memories.

And I am grateful for this community. It's become like a reunion in March-- a time to reconnect with so many of you while at the same time, it's a time to clear space for noticing, naming, and then writing about the moments that would otherwise pass me by.

Here's to March.

  1. Hi Mel! Don't know how many times our paths will cross during this challenge, but I want you to know how much I love the subtle, gut-busting humor in some of your writing. It's so great! Love the concept of March Reunion...so apt. Here's to March :)

  4. Happy March! It really is like a reunion, isn’t it? I love this community, and reading posts like this makes me realize just how special this month is and how it does “clear space for noticing, naming, and then writing about the moments that would otherwise pass me by.”

  6. March is a reunion month isn't it? I Like how you call it that. I found myself scrolling through to read today's various writings and found myself smiling when I came across a few of the names. I cannot wait to read about your moments throughout this month's challenge.

  7. I have really enjoyed rereading my slices this past week - it really is a timehop. I love this scene: "You've actually gotten a lot of mileage out of those whoopie pies," Cecily said, as we laughed about her senior slide, her ritual of baking for study groups, and the appreciation anyone on the receiving end of her baked goods had. "You could do a whole whoopie pie slicing series." Made me both laugh and tear up -- this is going to be some month!

  8. "A reunion"--YES! I'm really out of the writing habit right now and dragging my feet a bit today and not yet fully committed in my own mind, but I knew I'd be too sad not to show up at the reunion! So here I am. The writing for me will be a bonus this year because mostly I just love the community. Had to laugh at getting a lot of mileage out of the whoopie pies.

  10. Love this reflection on your previous slices. It's funny how we look at our kids as the topics of slices. So many of mine come from them. Here's to whoopie pies and dresses!

  11. "...writing about the moments that would otherwise pass me by." This is one of the reasons I find the March Slice challenge so valuable. The other reason is the connection to other writers. I look forward to reading your slices this month!
