Slice of Life 2020: 11 of 31- Trying to Make Sense of Way Too Much

March is for daily slicing, and all are welcome! Join us at Two Writing Teachers!

Today has been overwhelming, and I wish I could think of a slice that captures it, but I just can't.

Even now, as I sit on the sofa with my laptop in the house that we moved into on Monday, thoughts are swirling as I listen to Cecily go on and on about her tennis season that is likely to not happen, about the play that is only available via live stream, about the basketball tournament that has been canceled, and the protests that are happening because students are outraged.

And I am thinking about the Facebook posts that are teaching me about the potential effects of this virus.

And I am trying to figure out what to do about my college junior who is midway through her semester abroad in South America. Do I bring her home? When does that call get made? Who makes it? If I make her come home before they make the decision, then she loses this semester-- her credits and all the money they cost. Both of my daughters' colleges have suspended personal learning indefinitely.

And I am thinking about one of my best and oldest friends who I spent the day with because today was her husband's funeral and he died suddenly on Thursday.

And I still can't believe this is all happening.

My post makes little or no sense, and I'm sorry for that. Maybe tomorrow I will make more sense. Maybe tomorrow I will have more sense. Right now, it's all way too much.

  1. Your post makes perfect sense to me. You’ve expressed the sense of helplessness many feel. Our lives have been disrupted in ways we could not have imagined as 2019 ended and 2020 unfolded. Adding to the chaos is the absence of effective leadership.

I don’t have any answers. Does anyone? I just want to validate your concerns and carry them with you.

  2. It's surreal. Every minute, the decisions, the anticipation, the unknown, the known. You are not alone. Before we closed, "until further notice", today, a kindergartener, unaware of what is really happening, leaned in and gave me the biggest hug...that made sense. Let's all hang in there, together.

  3. Oh my goodness. You really have a whole lot of difficult stuff going on. I'm guessing they will send your daughter home from South America soon. Things seem to be happening so quickly from one day to the next. So sorry about your dear friend's suffering. I wish you some peace. Maybe get some fresh air and breathe. Sending you positive thoughts.

  4. Makes complete sense. My daughter is a sophomore in college. She loves it and I hope she can continue her college experience. Good luck to you, your daughter, and your friend.

  6. It is a slice of life in the truest sense. Take care of you, too. This is a difficult time for sure.

  7. Your post does make sense! I can tell your mind is really wandering...and to have moved in the middle of all the other stuff you are thinking about! Oh my. One of our nearby universities just announced today that courses were moving online for the rest of the semester (2.5 weeks only!) Hopefully your life, and thoughts, will calm and settle soon.

  8. I hear you, Melanie. I had a very hard time pulling together a slice today that made any sense. My thoughts were so very scattered, and I kept checking the news at the end of every sentence. It really is hard to make sense of all that is going on or know what is best to do.
